Each has its own shorthand symbol made of one or two letters, and each has its own special number, called its Atomic Number which is its place in the list going from lightest to heaviest atoms. Wonder at the Universe’s lightest atoms, hydrogen (Atomic Number 1) and helium (Atomic Number 2), formed in the first few minutes after the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago.
